BACK TO NEWS STORIES

Soundtrack for Murdoch Dynasty

I’m pleased to announce that the soundtrack to this three-part BBC Series is out now on Spotify and in all the other usual places.

I really enjoyed working on this show, with 72 Films and the excellent director Jamie Roberts. Although I began work on the music back in September 2019, a large part of the score was written in a hastily-assembled home studio during the Covid-19 lockdown. I asked the brilliant cellist, Nick Holland, to play on lots of the tracks, recording from the comfort of his own home. Such is the way the of the world in 2020!

In initial conversations with the director, we discussed how the music should explore the many facets of Rupert Murdoch’s personality. The man is nearly 90 years old and still wields huge power over the biggest media empire in the world… his drive and determination is indisputable. Yet despite this power, he is hardly ever seen in public so remains incredibly enigmatic.

And then there is also a darkness there… For a liberal like myself, the causes he and his media outlets have championed, from the Iraq War, through Brexit to Trump, are a total anathema, and his denial (or at least downplaying) of human-influenced climate change is nefarious.

I wrote a bit more about the project here.

The album has 21 tracks and is available on Spotify as well as other digital music providers.
