Charlie & Lola – Reading
Lola starts learning to read in this episode… and this is the story she reads. I thought the series was always pretty good at doing the whole ‘teaching’ thing without being too preachy – usually by being fairly oblique. They played this clip at the RTS Award Ceremony when they announced that John & I had won the Best Original Score award, so this feels like a bit of an ‘Oscar moment’! We didn’t get to make a speech though, which is probably just as well as we were speechless and may have thanked god or done something crazy like that.
It’s not really typical Charlie & Lola in terms of animation or music – it has more of an old Disney style than we normally went for. But I think it works pretty well. Lizzie Richards played the piccolo beautifully on this piece. I can’t remember if it was also her (or me) who bashed out Lola’s recorder too.
