Tommy Zoom

[30 x 10min, BBC, 2007-8] Animation / live action series for BBC2 & CBeebies and International markets.

I worked on this series in late 2006 to early 2008 at the same time I was working on Charlie & Lola, as well as various other projects. They made 30 episodes which are shown a lot on CBeebies, and sometimes on BBC2, so you can normally watch some episodes on the BBC iPlayer. It was one of very few animated series to be made in-house by CBeebies (in fact it may be the only one ever, but don’t quote me on that), and the producers, Stephen Cannon & Helen Baker, were lovely to work with.

Every episode the real (i.e. live action) Tommy and his dog Daniel face a little dilemma, and ask themselves, “What would Tommy Zoom do?”; then they become animated super-powered versions of themselves (Tommy Zoom), save the world from Polluto’s evil plans, before returning to ‘reality’ with an answer to their problem.

I was asked to make an extended version of the theme tune for an album of kids tv themes and I was really happy with it – it sounded more Queen / Darkness than the version on the show. However, sadly the album totally flopped (it was called ‘Hey Hey’ in case you ever see a copy in a charity shop!) and was quickly withdrawn… not the fault of Tommy Zoom, honestly! Anyway, I’ve talked to the beeb about getting this version released on iTunes or something, and there is a plan to do that at some point. Until that glorious day arrives, I’ve included an mp3 of the main chunk of the theme from the show…
