Silence Becomes You
[86min, 2005] Feature film starring Alicia Silverstone, Sienna Guillory and Joe Anderson.
Director: Stephanie Sinclaire, Producer: Karl Richards

This was the first fiction feature film I worked on. I had previously scored a short film with the director, Stephanie Sinclaire – an adaptation of The Tell Tale Heart (by Edgar Allen Poe), which had gone really well. Because it was my first feature, I had to do a lot of pitching and spec-writing to convince the whole team to let me score the movie, but eventually I got the gig.
Alicia Silverstone (who I absolutely adored in Clueless) plays Violet while Sienna Guillory (Eragon, Inkheart) plays her sister Grace. They live in a ramshackle mansion in the middle of nowhere, haunted by memories of their youth and their domineering father (Leigh Lawson). Like a pair of mermaids, they ensnare a wayward dude (Joe Anderson) to have their wicked way with him, but not all goes to plan.
It was a difficult film to guage the tone of, with elements of horror, fairytale, mysticism and romance. I was really pleased with much of the music which I think steered fairly successfully between these worlds. The two sisters constantly flit between the playful and sinister and the music had to do likewise. The budget wouldn’t stretch to an orchestral recording session on this score, but we did get a couple of sessions with a small group of London string players, which made a big difference.
Here are a few clips from the score…
