Flighty
[90 seconds, 2006] Incredibly short film about butterflies speed-dating,
Director: Leigh Hodgkinson, Producer: Slinky
* Winner of DePict Short Film Competition, 2006
The lovely Leigh Hodgkinson made this very tiny film and actually just stuck a piece of my music over the top of it, so I really can’t take any credit for how well the score works here! The piece was actually an early sketch for her previous film, Moo(n). I made some of the sounds by banging a few miscellaneous objects lying around the studio – I remember the little Brabantia bin working quite well with brushes. I also grabbed a few saucepans, and, as far as i remember, the ‘flappy’ sound that works quite well on this film was a kind of big cake tray: not very useful in the kitchen, but it made a lovely bendy noise when flapped!
I also used the old banjo I own that is so bendy-necked that it can only produce discords, and the piece also provides a rare outing for my saxophone. Such a terribly unfashionable instrument still, in spite of the Zutons!
