i was just a sapling
who thought he was a tree
saying to the world
“hey, won’t you take a look at me?”
always thought i had to hurry
to try to prove my worth
as if at any moment
i would be pulled out of the earthnobody told me life was so very long
and we don’t die at thirty
but still carry on
thought the curtain would fall
if i played such a slow song
but now i’ve started i don’t want to stop
so let’s take it from the topi was racing for the finish line
just as soon as i begun
and i never seemed to notice
how far there was to run
didn’t know where i was going to
and i didn’t pause to check
with the shadow of tomorrow
always breathing down my necknobody told me life was so very long
