TAKE IT FROM THE TOP

i was just a sapling
who thought he was a tree
saying to the world
“hey, won’t you take a look at me?”
always thought i had to hurry
to try to prove my worth
as if at any moment
i would be pulled out of the earth

nobody told me life was so very long
and we don’t die at thirty
but still carry on
thought the curtain would fall
if i played such a slow song
but now i’ve started i don’t want to stop
so let’s take it from the top

i was racing for the finish line
just as soon as i begun
and i never seemed to notice
how far there was to run
didn’t know where i was going to
and i didn’t pause to check
with the shadow of tomorrow
always breathing down my neck

nobody told me life was so very long
and we don’t die at thirty
but still carry on
thought the curtain would fall
if i played such a slow song
but now i’ve started i don’t want to stop
so let’s take it from the top
