LESS FLATTERING LIGHT


i stole her heart with a song
but i couldn’t keep it for long
she left because she discovered i was
insanely insecure
some words i wrote had her convinced
i would act the noble prince
but i was just like all the others
who’d let her down before

so from now on every song i write
will show me in a less flattering light
it’s a cunning plan that i’ve devised
and when you find out that i am
a self-centred and jealous man
at least you cannot claim to be surprised

i won her love with a tune
but she took it back pretty soon
i let her down when she found
i was vacuous and vain
a song i wrote led her to believe
i would never lie, never deceive
she thought i was different from the others
but i was just the same

so from now on every song i write
will show me in a less flattering light
