EXPERIMENTS WITH HONESTY

you let me kiss you three times
as if i was on probation
i stuttered out a few lines
expressing admiration
you knew i was waiting
for words to be spoken
both procrastinating -
the silence unbroken

well i don’t know if i know enough
to know where i went wrong
but all i needed was somebody to hold me
and keep on holding all night long

my experiments with honesty didn’t get me anywhere
we made a mockery of a summer love affair

well i couldn’t sleep (on the sofa)
and you couldn’t sleep (in your own bed)
we both knew it was over
before it even started
in anticipation
of a late invitation
i left the door open
in the silence unbroken

my experiments with honesty didn’t get me anywhere
we made a mockery of a summer love affair

well i don’t know if i told a lie
or if the words i spoke were true
but all i needed was an arm around me
and the arm was attached to you

i didn’t mean to scare you off
with all my talk of love
but then i knew i’d scare you off
so what was i thinking of?

my experiments with honesty
didn’t get me anywhere
we made a mockery
of a summer love affair
